November 19/20 Private Tours – Oriel, Kim, Dan & Joan

Welcome back to Oriel, Kim, and Dan for their third visit to Cape Town!  Welcome also to Kim’s mum Joan for her first visit which I hope will not be her last.

Private tours offer the flexible option for sightseeing and we spent a day in the wine region, followed by a full day visit around the Cape Peninsular.

Returning to favourites in the wine region were Tokara (for their olive oil) and Moreson (for their method cap classique).   Warwick wine estate was a new experience with Kim and her mum demonstrating the wedding cup which is the logo on their wine labels.

The highlight of the Cape Peninsular tour was Chapman’s peak drive as it was closed on their previous visits.  They were captivated by this curvy, winding road, which runs from Noordhoek to Hout Bay for 9km.

The road is carved into the middle shale layer, in between the lower levels  of granite (hard) and the sandstone (soft) upper levels.  After seven years of construction the road was opened in 1922.

Dangerous falling rocks lead to the road closure in January 2000, and during this time protective- netting was positioned around this section of the peninsular.   Chapman’s Peak drive re-opened on December 2003 as a toll road.

Although bouts of heavy rain during our winter months (June, July, August) sometimes lead to temporary closures, Chapmans’ peak drive should be included on any visit to Cape Town.

Fining dining is on the top of their list of things to do in Cape Town, and they feasted at La Colombe, Ginja, and Beluga, to name a few.

It is important that our restaurants maintain high standards of cuisine and service and I look forward to hearing from readers about their positive dining experiences in Cape Town.
