Martha Stewart speaking at Design Indaba
Woolworths sponsored Martha Stewart‘s first ever visit to Cape Town, and CEO Simon Sussman introduced her to the stage at the breakfast presentation at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Martha spoke for an hour about the success of her company and described the portfolio of magazines, books, TV shows and product ranges she has introduced over the last twenty years. She was clearly more comforatble with an American audience as she went to great lengths to describe all the crafts you can make with glitter and Faux Bois, much to the amusement of the South Africans who had turned out to hear her speak.
I was expecting a presentation about being an entrepreneur, the successes and failures, rather than a commercialised product endorsement for Martha Stewart. While I believe that all things in life are an experience, I was a little agitated when I learnt that while I had paid R250 from computicket to attend, many in the audience had been given their tickets for free.
Martha is a hard working woman with her employees being family. Prior to Cape Town she visited Singita, one of our top Safari reserves which she clearly enjoyed rom reading her tweets and maybe the game reserves will entice her back to South Africa again one day?

Thank you Annette, you make a valid point. I don’t think I have been to a presentation before where the speaker was so poorly prepared for their audience.
For students. This reinforces the concept ” before a speech, know your audience and prepare accordingly”
Reading some of the other reviews of this event leads me to think that you have been too kind to Martha Stewart.
She went to visit the winelands : Warwick and Graham Beck amongst others. She Tweeted where she went, so gave Cape Town, SAA, Singita, One&Only Cape Town and our Mountain good mentions.
I hope she took a tour of the Peninsula while here. She will not find the beauty of Cape town anywhere else in the world.
